Sustainability, Circularity & Decarbonisation Strategy for the Built Environment

I help organisations across the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations (AECO) ecosystem close the gap between where they are today and where regulation, procurement and finance require them to be – with a clear roadmap, governance, KPIs and execution support.
  • From compliance to decision-ready data
  • From reporting to value creation
  • From ambition to execution

Why or What I Fix

Most organisations don’t fail on intent. They fail on ownership, operating model and decision-grade data.

Typical problems I am brought in to solve:

Problem → Outcome:

  • CSRD/ESRS with no operating model → roles, routines, controls and a reporting system that holds.
  • Carbon reporting that doesn’t change decisions → decision rules + KPIs that drive procurement and design + Support to CapEx and OpEx.
  • Scopes 1, 2 and 3 opacity → boundaries, supplier data strategy and a practical traceability roadmap.
  • Circularity as a slogan → requirements translated into specs, targets and execution across the value chain.
  • Tools without a system → sustainability data architecture + dashboards built around real decisions.
  • EPDs as a bottleneck → end-to-end management to deliver verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).
  • DPP uncertainty → data readiness and architecture for Digital Product Passports (DPP).
  • Teams not equipped to execute → executive workshops + capability sprints + playbooks

If you recognise any of these, you don’t need more initiatives – you need a strategy with an engine.

What You Get

Not a slide deck. You get a managed execution partnership that bridges technical science and executive decision-making.

Engagement Models:

  • Fractional Chief Sustainability Officer (Retainer): Strategic oversight for leadership teams – priorities, governance, KPIs, steering and decision support (without a full-time hire).
  • Managed Technical Delivery: I lead complex workstreams end-to-end (EPDs, carbon baselines, Scope 3, DPP readiness), coordinating the right experts and keeping accountability.
  • Fixed-Scope Sprints: Short, high-impact interventions to unblock a specific challenge (Diagnostic Sprint, KPI Sprint, Supplier Data Sprint, DPP Readiness Sprint).

Deliverables (examples):

  • Operating model & governance for CSRD/ESRS (roles, routines, controls, reporting calendar)
  • Scopes 1-3 roadmap linked to CapEx, procurement and business priorities
  • Decision-grade carbon data model (boundaries, assumptions, rules, KPI tree)
  • EPDs / DPP readiness (data templates, evidence pack, process + partner coordination)
  • Capability building (training, playbooks, toolkits – so your team can run it).

1. Strategic Diagnostic

Baseline + Priority Map

Rapid assessment of regulatory exposure and maturity to identify the 20% of actions that improve 80% of outcomes.

2. Managed Technical Execution

Target Model + KPIs + Delivery Plan

Turn requirements into a system teams can execute.

3. Implementation & Capability

Training + Handover + Routines

Build internal capability and keep the program moving.

How I Work

I work as a strategic advisor and implementation partner using a simple method: Diagnose → Design → Deliver ().

1. Diagnose

Understand reality fast

You get: baseline + decision map + risk & opportunity hotspots.

  • Business model & value creation logic
  • Regulatory exposure (CSRD/ESRS, CPR, DPP, etc.)
  • Data maturity & digital readiness
  • Value chain + supplier reality

2. Design

Build a strategy that can run

You get: operating model + roadmap + KPI tree + decision rules.

  • aligned with business priorities
  • grounded in regulation and standards
  • technically robust
  • operationally executable

3. Deliver

Turn it into execution

You get: implementation support, steering and capability.

  • programme/project structuring
  • governance setup and facilitation
  • dashboards that support decisions
  • supplier engagement and data workflowss

How I Operate

  • Independent, objective advice
  • No conflicts of interest
  • No “tool pushing”
  • No one-size-fits-all

Sustainability only matters when it changes decisions.

About Me

I’m a sustainability, circularity and decarbonisation strategist for the built environment. I hold a MSc and a PhD in Civil Engineering (Instituto Superior Técnico – University of Lisbon) and I’m brought in when organisations need to turn regulatory complexity into roadmaps, governance, KPIs and execution.

Over the last two decades I’ve worked across project delivery, R&D, innovation and consulting, with the last decade focused on sustainability and circularity across construction, materials and the wider AEC ecosystem.

I co-authored Portugal’s Action Plan for Circular Construction (PACCO) among other National and European-level projects. Today, I help leadership teams move from reporting to decision-making – and from ambition to delivery – by building the operating model and decision-grade data that make sustainability actionable.

My background combines

  • Executive decision-support systems (governance, KPIs, dashboards)
  • Life-cycle & product sustainability (LCA/EPDs, eco-design)
  • Circular economy strategy (materials, products, value chains)
  • Climate regulation & ESG (CSRD/ESRS, GHG Protocol)
  • Digitalisation & traceability (data architecture, DPP readiness)
